Red Jeep Wrangler JL with a JcrOffroad Crusader mid-width front bumper on the trail

Stubby vs Mid-Width vs Full-Width Jeep Bumpers: Which One Should I Buy?

TL;DR
✓ Stubby (our Mauler and Dagger, $729): the most tire clearance for rock crawling, the least corner protection.
✓ Mid-width (our Crusader, $829): the middle ground, and what I'd put on most daily driven trail Jeeps.
✓ Full-width (our Vanguard, $899): the most fender and tire coverage for trees, brush and long trips, with the least clearance at the corners.
✓ Every one of them is laser cut from 3/16" steel and has a recessed winch mount, two 3/4" shackle tabs and Hi-Lift jacking points.
✓ All of them ship for $14.95 flat rate, and we laser cut, form, weld and powder coat them in-house in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The first question I ask anyone shopping for a front bumper for a Wrangler JK, JL or Gladiator JT is simple: how do you actually use your Jeep?

Stubby, mid-width and full-width bumpers all do the same basic job. They give you a place to mount a winch, a place to recover from and something stronger than the factory plastic. Where they differ is how much of the front corner they cover, and that trade-off between protection and clearance is the whole decision. Here's how I'd think about it, including where each style falls short.

What Is a Stubby Bumper and Who Is It For?

A stubby bumper protects the center of the Jeep and stops well inside the front tires. That leaves the tires out in front of the bumper, so they can climb onto a rock or a ledge before any steel gets in the way.

That extra clearance is why stubby bumpers are popular with people who do technical rock crawling. The downside is real: the front corners, the tires and the fenders are left exposed. Some people also just like the aggressive look, and that's a fine reason too.

We make two stubbies.

Mauler for JK, and Mauler for JL and JT
The Mauler is the design that put JcrOffroad on the map. There's a JK Mauler for the 2007 to 2018 Wrangler and a JL/JT Mauler for the 2018+ Wrangler and 2020+ Gladiator. Both are $729, weigh 48 lbs and are laser cut and formed from 3/16" steel. The bolt-on hoop is optional (+$49).

Dagger for JK, JL and JT
The Dagger is our other stubby, and one bumper design fits the JK, JL and Gladiator JT. It's $729 regular price, weighs 48 lbs, comes with the bolt-on hoop included and accepts factory round fog lights. Check the fog light note on the product page, because JL/JT Sport models need a pair of Mopar brackets.

What Is a Mid-Width Bumper and Why Do So Many People Pick It?

A mid-width bumper reaches farther toward the tires than a stubby, but it stops short of covering the whole front of the Jeep. You get some protection for the fenders and corners and still keep useful clearance for the trail.

For a lot of JK, JL and JT owners, this is the practical middle ground. If your Jeep is a commuter during the week and sees forest roads or rocky trails on the weekend, a mid-width handles all of it well.

Crusader for JK, and Crusader for JL and JT
Our mid-width is the Crusader, with a JK Crusader and a JL/JT Crusader. Both are $829, weigh 57 lbs and are laser cut and formed from 3/16" steel. They accept factory round fog lights (see the fog light note on each product page), and the bolt-on tube work is optional (+$49).

What Is a Full-Width Bumper and When Does It Make Sense?

A full-width bumper runs across most of the front of the Jeep and covers the corners out toward the tires. That extra coverage helps on wooded trails, in brush and anywhere something is likely to hit the front corners. Full-width bumpers also suit people who want a more traditional look.

The trade-off is clearance. On technical obstacles the extra width can touch before your tire does. Plenty of very capable Jeeps run full-width bumpers anyway, but it's worth knowing going in.

Vanguard for JK, and Vanguard for JL and JT
Our full-width is the Vanguard, with a JK Vanguard and a JL/JT Vanguard. Both are $899, weigh 57 lbs and are laser cut and formed from 3/16" steel. They accept factory round fog lights, and the bolt-on tube work is optional (+$50).

What Does Each Bumper Cost, Side by Side?

Here are the regular prices on our site right now, with powder coat or bare steel and no tube work:

✓ Mauler (JK or JL/JT): $729, 48 lbs, hoop optional (+$49)
✓ Dagger (JK, JL and JT): $729, 48 lbs, hoop included
✓ Crusader (JK or JL/JT): $829, 57 lbs, tube work optional (+$49)
✓ Vanguard (JK or JL/JT): $899, 57 lbs, tube work optional (+$50)

Each one ships for $14.95 flat rate. You can pick a satin textured black powder coat over zinc primer, or bare steel if you want to finish it yourself. If you go bare, get it coated soon after it arrives so it doesn't surface rust.

Does Bumper Width Affect Approach Angle?

Yes, but maybe not the way you'd think.

Approach angle mostly comes down to how low and how far forward the bumper sits. Width mostly affects corner clearance, which matters most when you come at an obstacle at an angle.

Say you're climbing a rock ledge. With a stubby, your front tire can usually get onto the rock before the bumper touches it. With a full-width, you may need to pick a slightly different line. If you drive technical terrain a lot, that difference is worth thinking about. If you mostly drive forest roads, it probably won't come up much.

What About Winches, Recovery Points and Lighting?

Width isn't the only thing to check. Think about what you're going to bolt onto it.

The good news is that the Mauler, Dagger, Crusader and Vanguard all share the same core features:

✓ A recessed winch mount for the common 10" x 4.5" bottom foot mounting pattern
✓ Verified fitment with Warn ZEON 8/10/12, Warn VR EVO 8/10/12 and Harbor Freight Badlands Apex 12,000 lb winches
✓ Two 3/4" thick shackle tabs for recovery
✓ Built-in Hi-Lift jacking points
✓ Bolt-on install with mounting hardware included

If you run a different winch, compare its overall dimensions to those models before you order. Lighting is where they differ. The Dagger, Crusader and Vanguard pages all say they accept factory round fog lights. The Mauler pages don't list that, so don't count on keeping your factory fogs with a Mauler.

Who Is Each Bumper Style NOT For?

I'd rather you buy the right bumper than the wrong one from us.

✗ A stubby is not for you if you drive tight wooded trails or brush and want your fenders protected. It leaves the corners exposed on purpose.
✗ A full-width is not for you if you're chasing every bit of tire clearance on hard rock lines. The corners can touch first.
✗ A mid-width is not for you if you already know you're at one extreme. If you're a dedicated crawler or you want maximum coverage, pick the bumper built for that.
✗ The Mauler is not the pick if keeping your factory fog lights matters. Look at the Dagger or Crusader instead.
✗ Bare steel is not for you if you can't get it coated soon after delivery. Order it powder coated.
✗ None of these are for you if price is the only thing that matters. We build them in Kalamazoo, and there are cheaper imported bumpers out there.

Does It Matter Whether I Have a JK, JL or JT?

The pros and cons of each style are the same whether you drive a Wrangler JK (2007 to 2018), a Wrangler JL (2018+) or a Gladiator JT (2020+). What changes is fitment.

The generations have different front ends, factory lighting and mounting. The Mauler, Crusader and Vanguard each come in a JK version and a JL/JT version. The Dagger is the one design that fits all three. Before you order, double check your model year, trim and factory equipment, and anything you want to keep.

You can browse all of our JK bumpers or JL and JT bumpers to compare.

Is This Bumper Actually Built by JcrOffroad?

Yes. We do everything in-house for all of our products. Every one of these bumpers is laser cut, formed, welded and powder coated at our shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Nobody else builds them for us.

Where Would I Start?

Here's how I'd decide if I were in your shoes:

  1. Be honest about where you drive. Mostly rocks, mostly trees and brush, or a mix of both?
  2. If it's mostly technical rock crawling, start with a stubby. Pick the Dagger if you want fog lights and the hoop included, or the Mauler if you don't need them.
  3. If it's a daily driver that sees trails on the weekend, start with the Crusader. It's what I'd put on most Jeeps.
  4. If it's mostly wooded trails, forest roads and long trips, start with the Vanguard for the corner coverage.
  5. Check your winch against the verified list and your fog lights against the product page before you check out.

There's no single right answer. All three styles have their place, and I've seen very capable Jeeps running each one. If you're still stuck, call us at 269-353-1184 (Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 ET) or contact us, and we'll help you sort it out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a stubby, mid-width and full-width Jeep bumper?
It's how far the bumper reaches toward the front tires. A stubby covers the center and leaves the tires exposed for the most clearance. A mid-width adds some corner and fender protection. A full-width covers most of the front, corners included.

Which bumper style is best for rock crawling?
A stubby, because the front tires can reach a rock or ledge before the bumper touches it. Our stubbies are the Mauler and the Dagger.

Which bumper style is best for a daily driver?
For most daily drivers that also see trails, I'd pick a mid-width like our Crusader. It balances protection and clearance.

How much do JcrOffroad front bumpers cost?
At regular price, the Mauler and Dagger are $729, the Crusader is $829 and the Vanguard is $899. Tube work is optional on the Mauler, Crusader and Vanguard, and the Dagger includes its hoop. Each ships for $14.95 flat rate.

Do these bumpers fit the JL and the Gladiator JT?
Yes. The Mauler, Crusader and Vanguard each have a JL/JT version and a separate JK version. The Dagger fits the JK, JL and JT.

Can I keep my factory fog lights?
The Dagger, Crusader and Vanguard accept factory round fog lights. Check the note on each product page for your trim, since JL/JT Sport models need a pair of Mopar brackets for the Dagger. The Mauler pages don't list fog light compatibility.

What winches fit these bumpers?
All four have a recessed mount for the standard 10" x 4.5" bottom foot pattern. We've verified the Warn ZEON 8/10/12, Warn VR EVO 8/10/12 and Harbor Freight Badlands Apex 12,000 lb winches. For other winches, compare the overall dimensions to those.

Where are JcrOffroad bumpers made?
In our shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. We laser cut, form, weld and powder coat everything in-house.
