In 2016, we built a Jeep Comanche and hauled it to the SEMA Show.
An MJ probably wasn't the obvious choice for a SEMA booth vehicle, which was part of the reason we wanted to build one. We took an old Comanche and built something pretty unique. Nearly a decade later, that truck has become a bit of an icon around here. We affectionately call it Manche.
A lot of what we built for Manche was custom. We weren't sitting down with a list of products we wanted to launch. We were building the truck we wanted to build, and many of those parts were never intended to become products at all.
Then the phone started ringing.
People wanted the parts they had seen on the truck, and one of the most requested was the rally-inspired roof rack.
We eventually put the MJ Roof Rack into production and sold it for a while. As time went on, demand slowed, and like products sometimes do, it eventually got the axe from our lineup.
We thought that was probably the end of it.
Apparently, Comanche owners had other plans.
"Do You Guys Still Make That Rack?"
Over the last few years, the calls and messages started coming back. People were finding old pictures of Manche, seeing the rack, and asking us the same question.
"Do you guys still make that MJ roof rack?"
For a while, the answer was no.
The Comanche hasn't been produced since 1992, so bringing back an old MJ product probably isn't the most obvious business decision. There aren't exactly more Comanches hitting the road every year.
But the people keeping these trucks alive really love them, and they kept asking.
Eventually, we stopped saying we didn't make it anymore and started asking ourselves why we weren't making it anymore.
So we brought it back.
The Same Idea That Started With Manche
The new MJ Roof Rack stays true to the idea behind the original. It's a rally-inspired rack designed specifically around the Comanche rather than a universal rack adapted to fit one.
It's completely bolt-on, so you don't have to drill holes in the roof of a truck that's getting harder to replace every year. The combination of steel mounting components and extruded aluminum rails gives you a solid place for extra gear while keeping the rack relatively lightweight.
The aluminum rails also give you plenty of flexibility for mounting gear. T-nut access points let you position things where they make sense for your setup rather than forcing everything into a few predetermined mounting locations.
You can also order it with or without a fairing for a 40-inch light bar, depending on how you want your MJ set up.
But the part we like most really isn't on the spec sheet.
Sometimes Customers Bring a Product Back
We've designed a lot of products over the years. Some become staples in our lineup. Some have a good run and eventually disappear. That's just part of manufacturing parts for vehicles that span several decades.
We figured this rack had run its course.
The Comanche community apparently disagreed.
There's something pretty cool about a part that started as a one-off idea for our own SEMA build, became a product because customers asked for it, disappeared for years, and then came back for exactly the same reason.
You kept calling. You kept messaging. You kept asking us to make it again.
We heard you.
Nearly a decade after Manche rolled into SEMA wearing the original, the JcrOffroad MJ Roof Rack is back.
