A question we hear from customers from time to time is:
"Why should I spend more on a JcrOffroad product when there are cheaper alternatives available?"
It's a fair question.
I'll never forget an off-road expo we attended around 2016.
Back then, we went all out for shows. We hauled in a toterhome, a large trailer, display racks, pop-up tents, and a couple of vehicles. It was a major undertaking, but trade shows gave us an opportunity to meet customers face-to-face and talk about the products we were building.
Like most exhibitors, we displayed prices throughout the booth. They weren't hidden. In fact, they were pretty hard to miss. Think Price Is Right style price tags hanging on the display racks.
At one particular show, a gentleman waddled into the booth, looked at one of our display products, glanced at the price tag, looked directly at me and said:
"$750? F*ck you."
Then he turned around and walked out.
The entire interaction probably lasted ten seconds.
At the time, I laughed about it. Looking back, though, I've come to appreciate that moment because it highlighted a challenge every manufacturer faces.
Most customers only see the finished product. They don't see the engineering, prototyping, material sourcing, fabrication, welding, grinding, deburring, powder coating, packaging, customer support, warranty support, or the thousands of decisions that happen before a product ever reaches their garage.
And honestly, why would they?
That's our job.
If customers don't understand why a product costs what it costs, that's not their fault. It's our responsibility to explain it.
So let's talk about what actually goes into the price of a JcrOffroad product.
TL;DR
- We looked at building a cheaper product line. Every cost-cutting option came with a real compromise in strength, fit, or finish, so we passed.
- JcrOffroad products are manufactured in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in a lean manufacturing facility built around eliminating waste, not cutting corners.
- Higher price reflects real costs: engineering and prototyping time, weld grinding and finishing, American wages and workplace standards, and a support team that's actually available when you need them.
- We're not trying to be the most expensive brand in the industry. We're trying to build a premium product at a fair price.
- If price is your only priority, JcrOffroad may not be the right fit, and that's okay.
We Actually Tried to Build a Cheaper Product
Like any manufacturer, we're constantly evaluating ways to provide more value to customers. We understand there are customers shopping primarily on price, and we'd be lying if we said we hadn't explored ways to compete more aggressively in that segment of the market.
On paper, the solution seemed simple. Use thinner material, simplify certain manufacturing processes, source less expensive hardware, and reduce some of the finishing operations.
None of those changes sound particularly dramatic on their own. But as we started evaluating them, a pattern emerged.
Every meaningful cost reduction seemed to come with a compromise.
The thinner material wasn't as rigid. The hardware didn't feel as premium. The fit and finish suffered. The installation experience became a little less refined.
As the discussions continued, we kept coming back to one question:
Would we put this on our own Jeep?
That question became surprisingly difficult to answer.
Eventually, we realized we weren't struggling to build a cheaper product. We were struggling to build a cheaper product that still felt like a JcrOffroad product. At some point, we decided we'd rather build products we're proud of than chase the lowest possible price tag.
That doesn't mean we're trying to be the most expensive brand in the industry. It simply means we've chosen not to sacrifice the things we believe create long-term value for our customers.
Where JcrOffroad Came From
This philosophy goes back to 2003, when I founded JCR Offroad out of my mom's 20x20 garage.
Like many small businesses, we started with limited resources, long hours, and a passion for building products we wanted on our own vehicles.
Over the years, JCR grew into one of the most recognized names in the Jeep aftermarket industry. In 2015, that same philosophy led us to launch Victory 4x4, a dedicated brand focused on Toyota trucks and SUVs.
From the beginning, the goal wasn't simply to sell parts. The goal was to build products we'd be proud to install on our own vehicles and recommend to our friends and family.
That philosophy still guides the company today.
Manufacturing Matters
The reality is that building a premium product requires more than premium materials.
How a product is manufactured matters just as much as what it's made from.
Over the years, we've invested heavily in our manufacturing capabilities because consistency matters. It's one thing to build a great product once. It's another thing to build that same product thousands of times while maintaining the same fit, finish, and performance.
Today, JcrOffroad products are manufactured in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in a state-of-the-art lean manufacturing facility.
Lean manufacturing is often misunderstood. Some people hear the word lean and assume it means cutting costs or reducing quality. In reality, lean manufacturing is about eliminating waste, improving processes, and creating more value for customers.
That's an important distinction, because expensive doesn't automatically mean premium.
Our goal isn't to charge more because we're inefficient. Our goal is to eliminate waste everywhere we can so we can invest more resources into the things customers actually care about: better materials, better engineering, better fit and finish, better quality control, and better customer support.
A premium product should cost more because of the value it delivers, not because of inefficiencies hidden behind the scenes.
What Are You Actually Paying For?
One of the challenges customers face today is that many products look remarkably similar online.
You can open five browser tabs and compare bumpers, rock sliders, skid plates, or MOLLE panels from different manufacturers. In product photos, they may appear nearly identical. The dimensions are similar. The features are similar. The materials may even be similar.
Yet the prices can vary dramatically.
The reason is that product photos rarely tell the whole story.
What customers don't see is Alex in engineering spending weeks designing and testing several prototypes before a product ever reaches production. They don't see the failed ideas, the revisions, or the countless small changes that happen before we're confident enough to put the JcrOffroad name on something.
They don't see the weld fixtures being refined, the installation instructions being rewritten, or the production team identifying ways to improve quality. They don't see the customer support team helping someone through an installation on a Saturday morning.
Those efforts don't show up in product photos, but they're a big part of what customers are paying for.
Another factor is where and how a product is made.
Manufacturing in the United States is not the cheapest option, and we know that. American wages are higher. Benefits cost money. Workplace safety standards are higher. Environmental regulations are stricter. All of those factors increase manufacturing costs, but they're also values we believe in.
We believe the people building our products deserve fair wages, good benefits, a safe workplace, and opportunities to build meaningful careers. When customers purchase a JcrOffroad product, they're helping support American manufacturing and the skilled people behind it.
Could we reduce costs by moving production overseas? Probably.
Would that align with who we are as a company? No.
We've chosen to build our products in Michigan because we believe it's the right thing to do, even when it isn't the cheapest.
The Details Matter
Many of the differences between premium and budget products aren't immediately obvious in product photos.
Things like hardware quality, fitment, powder coat durability, edge finishing, installation experience, and long-term support don't always jump off the screen when you're comparing products online. However, they're often the things customers appreciate most after years of ownership.
One area where we see things differently is weld finishing.
Many manufacturers leave welds exposed, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that approach from a structural standpoint. In many cases, it's a conscious decision to reduce labor and manufacturing costs.
At JcrOffroad, we've always believed our customers deserve more than a functional product. We believe aftermarket armor should complement the vehicle it's built for, not detract from it.
Grinding welds, deburring edges, and properly preparing a product for powder coating requires additional labor, additional time, and additional cost. Those processes don't necessarily make the product stronger, but they do create a cleaner appearance, a more refined finish, and a product we're proud to put our name on.
In our view, craftsmanship is found in the details. Leaving every weld exposed isn't craftsmanship. More often than not, it's a cost-saving decision. We'd rather invest additional time into making a product look like it belongs on the vehicle than simply build it as quickly as possible.
Those details aren't always obvious on day one, but they're often the things customers continue to appreciate years later.
Customer Support Is Part of the Product
When purchasing an off-road product, you're not just buying steel, aluminum, hardware, and powder coating.
You're also buying the support behind it.
Questions come up. Parts occasionally get damaged during shipping. Installations don't always go exactly as planned. Sometimes customers simply want reassurance that they're heading in the right direction before making a purchase.
Having a knowledgeable team available to answer questions and support customers is something we believe matters. Providing that level of support requires investment, but it's an important part of the ownership experience we want every customer to have.
Why Aren't You the Most Expensive?
This is a question we don't get asked very often.
The answer is simple.
We don't believe customers should have to pay the highest price to get a premium product.
There are several outstanding premium brands in the Jeep aftermarket industry, and many of them build excellent products.
Our goal has never been to position ourselves as the most expensive option available.
Instead, we've worked hard to create products that compete with the best in the industry while delivering exceptional value.
We want customers to feel confident that they received a premium product at a fair price.
Who Might Not Be a Good Fit for JcrOffroad?
We understand that every customer has different priorities.
JcrOffroad may not be the right choice if your primary goal is simply to find the lowest-priced option. There are products on the market that may better align with those priorities, and that's okay.
The right product isn't always the most expensive one. It's the product that best matches your needs, expectations, and budget.
Final Thoughts
Being a premium brand doesn't mean being the most expensive.
For us, it means delivering products that combine quality materials, thoughtful engineering, reliable support, exceptional fit and finish, and long-term value.
We're proud to manufacture our products in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and we're grateful for the thousands of customers who trust us to be part of their builds.
Whether you choose JcrOffroad or another manufacturer, we encourage you to look beyond the price tag and consider the overall value you're receiving.
That's often where the biggest differences are found.
See you on the trail.
